Basic Skills

Welcome to Reading Recovery, Kindergarten Intervention and  Basic Skills Programs at Maugham School. Kindergarten Intervention and the Basic Skills Programs are made up of small groups that meet several times per week, depending on the program students’ attend.

K-Intervention meets daily for thirty minutes and is made up of three to five students from each kindergarten class. Time is spent reinforcing classroom skills in language arts with a great emphasis on Concepts of Print. Using songs and poems, letter-sound recognition is reinforced and sight vocabulary reviewed. Folders containing the week’s focus are distributed on Fridays and brought home for students to review with a parent. Maintaining a binder of weekly songs and poems is encouraged. 

The Basic Skills Program is designed to support students in the general education setting and strengthen classroom skills in Reading, Writing, and Math. First and second grade children in the program meet with the basic skills teacher two to three times per week. Work, as requested by the classroom teacher, is reviewed and practiced within each thirty minute lesson. Communication with the classroom teacher is ongoing and individual needs are addressed.

Reading Recovery is an individualized instructional program for first grade students. Following the Reading Recovery format,  the student and teacher work together for thirty minutes each day, providing extra support to the general classroom literacy program. The program lasts for twelve to twenty weeks. The trained teacher helps the student read many books and write stories each day. In this way, the student reaches grade level expectations and the extra support is no longer needed.
